BURN SCAR MAPPING

A complete satellite-mapping service

Burn scar mapping is essential in accurately measuring the impact of burning in forests and so defining and organising rehabilitation projects and preparing for future reforestation campaigns.

Infoterra France has created a burn scar mapping service in close collaboration with SPOT Image, using a complete production process based on proprietary Infoterra technologies.

The geometric and radiometric data contained in the SPOT and FORMOSAT images are firstly corrected using Pixel FactoryTM. The fires’ outlines are then extracted and the vegetation damage caused is analysed by using Overland™ software to perform a historic study of the satellite images, classifying them extremely accurately and detecting areas of change between pre-fire and post-fire images as well as analysing whether the areas are indeed burn scars and not simply areas of felling.

This service is offered in the form of two complementary modular subscriptions providing:

A comprehensive end-of-season mapping of all fires larger than 1 ha that occurred during the fire season,
Maps of fires larger than 5 ha, on demand during the season.

The products provide the following:

  Fire outlines in vector format
Satellite image extracts in raster format
Fire coordinates, areas and outbreak date in attribute table form
Outlines produced from user-supplied GPS readings, if provided
A GIS containing all the above data generated during the campaign.
